Sacristan

Goal and Purpose

The goal of the sacristan is to prepare the altar for the Mass.  This involves the placement of liturgical books and vessels.  The sacristan is also responsible for the clean up after the Mass.  This includes washing the sacred vessels and replacing all items to their original storage area.


Responsibilities

The Sacristan undertakes the overall preparation of all liturgical celebrations, including daily Mass, weekend Masses, weddings, baptisms, and funerals. The Sacristan arranges the elements needed the Liturgical celebrations. The Sacristan is also responsible for coordinating all other liturgical ministers for each liturgy.


Qualifications

Sacristans must be fully initiated Catholics (received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).  If married, the marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church.  The sacristan must be willing to arrive at least one hour before the start of Mass and be willing to stay after the Mass in order to put everything away and possibly lock up the church building.
